C major has no black keys. Therefore, the key is perceived as ‘easy’. Nevertheless, some people find it difficult to play this key. This is not surprising, because the key does not lie as ergonomically in or under the hand as, for example, C minor.

C Major Fingering: How to Reach the Keys

If you want to play C major on the piano, you not only have to hit the right keys, but also pay attention to the correct fingering. Then it will be much easier to reach all the keys effortlessly and fluently.

Do you remember the circle of fifths? Here you can see all the keys listed quasi by difficulty. The following applies: The keys towards 12 o’clock are easier. The keys towards 6 o’clock are more difficult.

Wait a minute, C major is exactly at 12 o’clock and should therefore be the easiest key! For sheet music players, this may seem to be the case at first glance. After all, in the key of C major you only play white keys and don’t have to struggle with any accidentals. In music theory, this key is therefore perceived as simple. BUT: You noticed that C major is unfortunately not so easy ‘off the hand’. And that’s the catch with this key. But don’t worry, we’ll get through this together.

Assemble C Major Chord on the Piano

The basic position in C major is played with 1 (C) – 3 (E) – 5 (G). This is also the C major triad.

“The thumb is always 1, the index finger is 2, the middle finger is 3, the ring finger is 4 and the little finger is 5.”

The C major triad has the root C. You play this with your thumb. Then we build a third on top of it by playing the E with the middle finger. And then, seen from C, there is a fifth. To do this, we play the G with the fifth finger. You can find out more about thirds, fifths and intervals in general in another article.

“We play the first inversion with 1 (E) – 2 (G) – 5 (C). We play the second inversion again with 1 (G) – 3 (C) – 5 (E).”

Play the C major scale with the standard fingering

Use the standard fingering to play the C major scale.

1 (C) – 2 (D) – 3 (E) – 1 (F) – 2 (G) – 3 (A) – 4 (B) – 5/1 (C)

So, if you want to play a C major scale on the piano, start with your thumb on ‘C’, then play ‘D’ with your index finger and ‘E’ with your middle finger. Then tuck your thumb under (slide your thumb under your hand) onto the ‘F’ and play until the next ‘C’ until you run out of fingers.

Small Excursion: Playing C Major vs. C Minor

At the beginning of this article, I told you that C major is not as easy off the hand as C minor. This is because the black keys in C minor are friendly helpers for our fingers.

! In C minor you play C (1) – D (2) – Eb (3) and then tuck with your thumb. This is much more comfortable than in C major because we tuck from a raised key.

If you want to continue playing the C major scale after the first playthrough, you have to land on the 1, i.e. the thumb. And that is a very strenuous undertaking. After all, you have to push your thumb under your ring finger.

There is a great trick that will help you land on the C with your thumb at the end of the C major scale:

“You do NOT push your thumb forcefully under your index finger, but use your elbow for help. Push your elbow to the outside right. Then your thumb will land on the C almost by itself.”

This trick helps you to play the C major scale ergonomically and also supports a healthy posture.

If you now want to continue playing the C major scale (i.e. you have already arrived in the upper part of your piano keyboard), the thumb trick will no longer be sufficient. But here, too, there is a method to make playing easier for you. Simply move your shoulder with you – preferably directly from the loins and back.

Playing the C major scale down

If you want to play the C major scale downwards, it works similarly to playing upwards.

You start with the fifth finger on the C and play down

5 (C) – 4 (B) – 3 (A) – 2 (G) – 1 (F) – 3 (E) – 2 (D) – 1 (C)

The trick is the change between F and E. At this point, you slide your middle finger over your thumb.

That was a lot of info for today. Really great that you persevered. And don’t worry if it was a bit much. Just take another look at this post tomorrow. Then you will be able to process the information much more easily.

Discover how you can play any song without sheet music by applying the 3Ts of intuitive piano playing.

Because intuitive piano playing does without sheet music and classical theory, you learn it as quickly as you learned to speak as a child.

While for others the piano remains a “typewriter for notes”, you understand its tones and which combinations always sound right. You can express yourself through the piano – like a small child who has just learned to speak.

In future, you will be able to rely on your intuition in any situation: You will become immune to wrong notes because you will see the right keys in your mind’s eye even before you press them.

In my free workshop I will show you how it works.
