You want to learn piano. Right? I’m sure you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be here.
And because you’re probably just starting out, you’re asking yourself: What is the best way to learn piano?
Phew, good question. Back when I was a complete newbie at the piano, I would have definitely asked myself the same thing. And I would have been so grateful if my older self had given me the answer back then.
Then I would have reached my goals much faster and wouldn’t have had to go through a piano crisis in between. But more on that later.
The fact is: learning piano is an adventure. A challenge. But also a lot of fun. Provided you find the method that suits you best and gets you to your goals the fastest.
Good news. In this post, I’ll show you the most common methods of learning piano. Plus: At the end of the article, a particularly interesting way to learn to play the piano awaits you. One that challenges your intuition. And that is completely free for you.
So, let’s take a look at what methods there are and how you can learn to play the piano the fastest.
Best way to learn piano: How to find your way to the piano
Are you really excited to pound the keys? Are you looking forward to finally getting started on your keyboard like a child? Totally understandable. After all, you are now completely motivated and finally want to play the piano.
But one question arises: What’s the best way to start?
To answer this question, you need to ask yourself more questions.
What now? Answer a question with a question?
Exactly. Before you make music, you need to be clear about a few things. And if you know these things, you also know how – and where – to start best.
Question 1: Are you self-taught or more of a team piano teacher?
I know so many motivated piano players and pianists who simply teach themselves how to play the piano. That’s possible – no question. The prerequisite, however, is that you have enough motivation and discipline. Because that’s where many fail. And that’s nothing to be ashamed of.
One way to ‘force’ yourself to practice regularly and not lose sight of making music is classic piano lessons with a teacher.
The principle is simple: If you take lessons weekly, you are forced to practice regularly. This is how you stay on track. The disadvantage: Learning piano can quickly become a chore. And honestly, that sucks. Big time. Also: You have to play what your teacher tells you to play.
In my opinion, playing the piano should always be fun and you should be able to choose what you want to play yourself. This is the only way you will enjoy making music and, over time, you will automatically get better and better.
Because you have a certain vision of what you want to do on the piano at some point. And it’s probably not “Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen” from “Easy Piano Pieces for Beginners”, is it?
By the way: At the end of this post, I’ll introduce you to a method of learning piano that will always keep you happy. I’m sure of it. The magic word is ‘intuition’. But more on that later.
Question 2: Do you want to learn online or on site?
At the latest since a global pandemic turned life on this world upside down, a lot has shifted to the internet. The home office has become a reality for more and more people. Sports courses were held online. And yes, even piano lessons were conducted via the World Wide Web.
So it’s no wonder that more and more people are choosing to learn online. The options here are diverse. There are piano apps where you see colored bars trickling into the piano on the screen. There are online teachers who personally support you and give you help with making music via webcam. And there are piano courses whose modules you simply work through according to your taste.
Alternatively, you can of course also take piano lessons at your location. Private teachers are an option here. Or you can attend a music school. Here you have the choice between individual and group lessons.
Question 3: Do you want to play from sheet music?
In classical piano lessons, you play from sheet music. That’s the custom. And it will probably always be that way. But there are also other forms of music education. Such as playing by ear. Or making music by intuition – my favorite variant. I’ll introduce you to this later.
Being able to play from sheet music has advantages. You can simply type almost any song for which there is sheet music into your keyboard and the thing already sounds good. Problem: You don’t know WHY you’re playing it and why it sounds good. And you can’t apply what you’ve learned yourself. You’re just copying what’s there – like typing text on a typewriter.
Also: There is no sheet music for every song. And sheet music can also be terribly complicated. So that you have to practice for a long time – a very long time – to be able to perform difficult songs on the piano. After all, you are learning a new language. The language of music, and that also using a dictionary. That’s tedious and takes forever.
The alternative: Play piano without sheet music.
Making music without sheet music sets you free. But especially as a newbie at the piano, you don’t even know what to do with yourself. And your fingers. So here you need instructions on how to bring something worth listening to to the keys without sheet music. And I’ll give it to you. On piano.university
Here you will find my online piano course for people who want to make music without sheet music – and purely by intuition. Sounds exciting? Then I have a really great surprise for you.
If you have answered the above questions yourself, then you also know where or how to start best. Either you get an app. You look for a piano teacher. You decide on a music school. Or you find an online course that will get you to your goals. The possibilities for beginners are diverse. And the entry is different for everyone.
How Long Does it Take on Average to Learn Piano?
At this point a little interjection. You have seen that there are many ways to learn piano. You have to decide for yourself which one is right for you. But one thing I can tell you: Each of these methods takes time. Yes, you can play your first melodies on the piano quite quickly. But it takes time until you can really convincingly play complete songs.
Although there is also a method that is different. A method with which you learn everything you need to play the piano within a few weeks. And with which you automatically get better and better.

Concrete methods to learn piano
You know for yourself how you want to learn and what you want to achieve. Based on this, you will certainly find the best method for you to make music.
But apropos method. Did you know that there are entire music education concepts? The most well-known among them is the Suzuki method. It makes use of the principle behind learning a mother tongue.
Mother Tongue Method: the Suzuki Method Explained in Brief
Music is like learning to speak. At least according to the Japanese violin pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki. Do you agree with him?
Whatever your opinion on this thesis. Suzuki has used it as the basis for his music learning concept. We’ll get to that now.
Think about how a baby learns to speak.
It doesn’t have a curriculum. Nor grammar books. And written assignments are definitely not used. So how does the toddler learn?
Through observation and imitation.
The child listens. All day long. When the parents talk to each other. When it is pushed around in the stroller. When there are visitors. Just always. And at some point it comes to a point where it imitates the sounds it has heard. The sounds become words. Then sentences. And at some point a complex language.
The Suzuki method works in a similar way. Reading music is completely dispensed with at first – like with a child who doesn’t have to read at first. Because reading music is nothing more than reading letters. Same principle.
With the Suzuki method, you learn to play the piano by imitation. And over time you acquire a musical repertoire.
How Suzuki really helps you
Hmmm. Is the Suzuki method really the be-all and end-all? I can definitely see you frowning right now. Rightly so. Because: The Suzuki or mother tongue method has one decisive disadvantage. It is aimed at children. Children who want to make music and are supported by their parents. The concept makes use of the way children learn. And uses the advantage of starting early.
So, and now to you. Are you a child? Let me guess: Certainly not! Do you have a lot of time? Definitely not! Would you like to learn piano as effectively as possible as an adult and achieve rapid progress? Definitely! Because your lifetime is limited and you want to make music NOW.
Become an enviable pianist in just a few weeks
No sheet music! That’s the crux of the matter that I like so much about the Suzuki method.
Learn piano without sheet music? That works. And do you know how?
Through a very special method of learning piano. A method that dispenses with sheet music. Only requires the bare minimum of music theory. And that will turn you into a free piano virtuoso and an independent pianist within a few months.
Does it all sound too good to be true? But it’s not.
I’m talking about intuitive piano playing.
Intuitive piano playing is a method of making music that you can learn at any age. And that with pure ease. And lots of joy. It is a real alternative to classical music lessons and has already turned hundreds of people into piano players.
But what is the approach here?
With intuitive piano playing, you learn which notes go together. How chords are structured. And how you can simply bring heard songs to the keyboard. With this know-how, you can work on your musical repertoire for months or even years. And get better and better. Completely without lessons.
The only thing you need is an introduction. A course where you learn the tools for intuitive piano playing. And you know what? This course already exists.
We are talking about the Masterclass Intuition. My program for everyone who wants to learn to play the piano without sheet music. And who don’t have time to torture themselves with music theory for years.
