Learn piano without sheet music: Discover the joy of making music by intuition

piano background

Anyone who plays by sheet music can certainly perform great songs and pieces on the piano. But there’s a problem: Without sheet music, that person is lost. Playing a song spontaneously on the piano – for example, at a wedding – that’s not possible.

But isn’t that the point of playing the piano? To spontaneously play your favorite songs for yourself, your friends, or your family? And always stay calm while doing so?

You certainly understand exactly what I mean. Even if you’ve been playing the piano for many years, you might simply lack the ‘freedom’ to spontaneously perform a song without effort.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, anyone can learn to play piano freely. You can too. How? I’ll tell you in this post.

Free Piano Playing vs. Intuitive Piano Playing

Playing piano without sheet music – that’s the dream of many people. Not just beginners, but also pianists who have been playing by sheet music for many years.

For example, in collaboration with an online piano teacher. Or even a local piano teacher.

Unfortunately, piano lessons – no matter how professional – don’t necessarily mean you’ll eventually be able to play piano freely. On the contrary.

If your piano lessons are structured primarily around playing by sight, you won’t learn to play piano freely even after years.

What is free piano playing?

When I talk about free piano playing here, I mean intuitive piano playing. Because: Free piano playing actually just means playing without sheet music.

However, intuitive piano playing goes a step further. Here, you play by feel – or reproduce songs and pieces by ear.

With free piano playing, on the other hand, you might learn a song with sheet music and then learn to play that song freely (without sheet music).

The result is the same. However, the path to get there differs. And is usually much more complicated.

Intuitive Music-Making Makes You Better

So, what is free piano playing? Free piano playing is playing the piano without sheet music. You free yourself from papers and such. Instead, you focus solely on your instrument, the keys, the sound, and of course, your hands.

In the following, when I speak of free piano playing, I always mean intuitive piano playing. Making music intuitively helps you progress on your instrument – and makes you a better musician. Simply because you develop an even greater feel for the music and your instrument.

Test your ear: Can you recognize the last note?

What does playing piano freely sound like?

Have you ever tried to play a song on your piano that was originally written for completely different instruments? Then you’ve certainly noticed that the original song and the piano version had little in common. Or worse: That the song just didn’t come across on the piano as it should have.

You solve this problem with free playing. When you free yourself from sheet music, you are no longer tied to specific instruments for any song – and you can make any song sound great on your instrument.

How I Play My Favorite Song Intuitively on the Piano

I’d like to show you an example of this. The song ‘Heast as net’ by ‘Hubert von Goisern und Die Alpinkatzen’ is a song I personally like very much.

But I couldn’t find sheet music for it anywhere. Good for me! Because that way, I could interpret the song by ear and get the most out of the track.

Just listen to the original song:

Play Piano by Intuition

Discover how you can play any song without sheet music by applying the 3Ts of intuitive piano playing.

Can you imagine this song on the piano? I had my very own interpretation of the song in mind and improvised it on the piano. Here’s the result:

In my opinion, the piano version is beautiful and is in no way inferior to the original. When I improvise such pieces freely on the piano, I am happy. That is fulfilling piano playing for me.

Play by Sheet Music or Be Free?

Perhaps sheet music has given you a sense of security over the years. The sheet you could always follow, telling you where, when, and how to place your fingers on the keys of your instrument. And which notes to play.

But be completely honest with yourself: Is that really security? My experiences show me something completely different.

Goodbye Stage Fright! Hello Freedom!

Since I started playing piano intuitively, I no longer fear mistakes. I have less or no stage fright before live performances. And I feel more confident on my instrument than ever. But what’s the big difference between free playing and playing by sheet music?

From Reproducer to Interpreter

If you play by sheet music or perhaps by video tutorials, you are simply reproducing what others have prescribed for you.

Admittedly: To get to know your instrument and develop a feel for it, this method is quite effective. And it’s definitely a way to start making music in the first place.

But as soon as you stop playing only by instruction and allow intuition into your piano playing, you will discover completely new worlds.

That it brings incredible joy to be your own maestro at the piano and to play chords and melodies entirely without videos or sheet music. Simply by feel.

Play What You Want

And the best part: You can simply play what you want anytime. Instead of having to invest in expensive sheet music books, you simply play your favorite song by ear.

You play the chords in a way that matches your learning level and is also your own interpretation of a song. Believe me: This way, you convey much more emotion and feeling when making music.

Let me show you how you can ignite a fireworks display on your keyboard instrument in the future, without sheet music and the like. Anytime. Completely spontaneously. In clear videos, I’ll take you step by step on a journey into the world of musical intuition.

The result: In the future, you’ll be able to perform your favorite songs on the piano in your own version simply by listening to them. I’ll also show you how to recognize melodies, play chords, master chord progressions, and always maintain control over your fingers.

Online Course for More Freedom on the Piano

Have you ever tried an online piano course? From experience, I can tell you: Generally speaking, it’s neither better nor worse than working with a piano teacher.

But honestly: If you want to play your piano with enthusiasm long-term, I recommend intuitive piano playing.

There are also special online courses for this that will help you understand your instrument in a completely new way. And the best part: If you bring a little patience, it won’t be long until you play your first songs freely and without sheet music.
