Make learning songs easier with chord accompaniments
Reading sheet music can be a challenge, especially when trying to read two staves simultaneously. However, if you’re interested in pop music by artists like The Beatles, Queen, or Robbie Williams, there’s a simple solution: chord accompaniment.
This type of piano accompaniment allows you to learn songs faster and play spontaneously from sheet music, by focusing on harmony instead of deciphering every single note head and rhythm. It might be an adjustment at first, but the benefits you gain from this technique are worth it!
Chords: the Foundation for Creativity and Improvisation
Playing with chords opens a door to a new musical landscape where creativity and improvisation set the tone.
When you play a chord like F major, it consists of three notes: F, A, and C. But how you arrange these notes, whether sequentially, simultaneously, or in what rhythm, is entirely up to you.
This freedom encourages you to discover your musical taste and express your creativity. You can even improvise your own melody that fits your chord accompaniment, laying the foundation for your own song!
Your Own Song
With piano chords, you can write your own song! You no longer need to think in individual notes, but instead focus on the chord progression.
With just two chords, such as a tonic and subdominant, you can already write a simple but effective piece.
If you add a dominant to these two chords, ideally as a seventh chord, you get the basis for a beautiful blues or many other musical pieces.
The Golden Rules of Piano Accompaniment
Even though there’s no fixed way to play piano accompaniment, there are some general rules you should follow.
Rule No. 1: be Quieter than the Melody
Your main task as an accompanist is to support and highlight the melody. That’s why it’s important to learn to play softly. This may sound simple, but it actually requires a lot of practice and control.
Rule No. 2: Play Lower than the Melody
Our ear always perceives the highest note first. This means that the harmonies should never be higher than the melody, otherwise the melody will be overshadowed by the accompaniment.
Three Simple Accompaniment Techniques to get Started
Now that we know the basic rules, let’s look at some fundamental accompaniment techniques.
Technique No. 1: Separate Melody and Chords
The first technique is very simple and ideal for beginners. The right hand plays the melody,
Technique No. 2: Shift the Chords to the Right Hand
The second technique is particularly suitable if you enjoy singing or making music with someone. In this case, you shift the chords to the right hand and omit the melody. Experiment with different chord positions and inversions to find the most suitable one.
Technique No. 3: Play the Chords as an Arpeggio
The third technique is a bit more complicated but offers a beautiful, classical timbre. You play the chords in the left hand as an arpeggio. This means you play the notes of the chord one after another, which gives the accompaniment an elegant, wave-like movement.
Let’s Summarize
And so we’ve reached the end of our exploration of the fascinating world of piano accompaniment. Remember that your accompaniment is more than just a support for the melody – it gives the piece character and expression. With the rules and techniques presented, you can add depth and individuality to your pieces.
The most important thing is to see your music as an expression of your personality. Be creative, have fun, and try out new styles and techniques. This way, you’ll continuously improve and find your unique sound. So, sit down at the piano and let the music speak!
