How to learn to play the piano quickly, efficiently, and with fun
Learning to play the piano as an adult. It’s possible. And easier than you might think. I’ll show you how to learn to play the piano in no time.
It is important: It has to be quick. Because our lifespan on this planet is limited. Which means for you: Use the time you have left.
You certainly have a good reason for wanting to play the piano. You want to be able to perform your favorite songs. Impress friends and family with your skills. Or even bring your own compositions to the keyboard.
What you certainly don’t want: Practice. Practice. Practice. Because as I said: Our lifespan is limited. And the time you can spend playing the piano should be used wisely. Not just consist of practice. But be fun. Right?
The good thing is: Adults can also learn to play the piano. And that extremely quickly. If they choose the right technique or the right course. And you know what? Exactly such a course exists. My online piano lessons for intuitive piano playing. Here, learning is a lot of fun and you make progress at any age. But more on that later.
Let’s first take a look at your options. And show you that you can really learn an instrument at any age.
Age is just a Number
You can’t teach an old dog new tricks!
Is that so? I have to say: I know some dogs that are well over ten years old and still learning. So, for me, there’s nothing to this wisdom!
Science proves it. There is no time window in which the brain is particularly receptive to music. Other factors are more decisive. Want proof?
Children learn some things much faster and easier than adults. This is thanks to their still extremely adaptable brain. But not all skills that one wants to acquire are easier for children. For example, when it comes to making music.
A study by the Swedish scientist Laura Wesseldijk was able to show that there is no special time window in childhood in which musical abilities develop faster. If people play an instrument particularly gifted, it is more likely due to the many hours of practice.
“Our results provide little direct evidence that early training has a specific, causal influence on later performance. Rather, they show how important it is to include the number of practice hours as well as genetic and environmental factors when examining how an early start to training affects musical abilities later in life.” (Source: spektrum.de )
Well, that’s great news. No matter how old you are: You can learn to play the piano. It is only important that you stay on the ball. And in the best case, choose a course with which you achieve rapid success. The magic word is ‘Intuition’. We’ll get to that.
Why should I learn piano as an adult?
Attention, it’s getting scientific again. And super interesting.
An empirical study of adults as instrumental students shows: There are many reasons for adults to learn an instrument. The adult test subjects all appreciate the time on their instrument and rate it as follows:
“Making music is a very meaningful way to spend free time”
“Making music relaxes me more than most other activities”
“With making music, I fulfill a long-cherished wish”
“After making music, I feel satisfied and balanced”
“Making music makes me happy because I am active / I can show that I am not so unmusical”.
Admittedly. The study is no longer the newest. It comes from the year 1988. All the more surprising that these statements can be transferred one-to-one to our present time.
Around 35 years later, adults decide to learn piano for exactly the same reasons. At least that’s what I notice. Whenever I ask my Intuinauts – that’s what we intuitive piano players at piano.university call ourselves – about their motives.
They all want to learn piano to fulfill a dream and make their free time more colorful. But they also use the piano to escape everyday life and simply be with themselves for a certain time. By the way, I feel the same way.
Now you might ask yourself: Find yourself? Escape everyday life? Is that possible as a complete beginner on the piano?
Short answer: Yes. You just have to make progress quickly. Then you can do it.
The question of all questions: How can I learn piano as an adult?
You now know that it is never too late to learn piano. That you don’t have to have had a piano teacher as a child to be able to play at an older age. And that there are numerous pianists who only discovered the piano for themselves as adults. Plus: Even science has proven that you can learn a musical instrument at any age. Wow! That’s great news.
I hope it has clicked in your head by now. Because if you belong to the people who believe that they cannot learn piano because of their age, then you should now think differently.
You do that now, ok? I know you can do it and I’ll help you.
Good. So: You now know that you can learn to play the piano as an adult. Now the question arises: Which form of piano lessons suits you? And which one gets you ahead quickly?
Learning to play the piano as an adult: These are your options
We are in the 21st century. And have numerous possibilities to learn an instrument. Significantly more than before. Why? The good old new internet is to blame as always.
Through the WWW, there is no longer just the piano teacher in his dusty classroom. Or the piano teacher who pesters you with music theory until you are finally allowed to hit the keys. There are so many more possibilities.
Piano Apps
They are popping up like mushrooms. Piano apps. Maybe you have already stumbled across one or the other application for learning piano. They are called Simply Piano, flowkey, Skoove – There are so many apps for learning to play the piano. I can’t even list them all here.
But the fact is: Every app is different. One completely dispenses with theory and lets you replay colorful bars. The next has a colorful mix of theory and practice. And the next offers you the very classic piano lessons, as you know them from the teacher on site.
You can find more information about learning piano via app in this article.
Only you can decide whether learning with an app suits you. I just want to give you one thing: Take a look at your options in peace. And check in the free test period (most apps have it) whether the app suits you.
Important: Some apps have a gigantic fund of songs that you can acquire. However, you can usually only access these songs if you have taken out an active subscription. As soon as your subscription expires, you often lose access to your pieces and songs.
Online Courses
Also digital. But different from piano apps. And certainly also interesting for beginners like you: Online piano courses.
Online again, but different? What is that supposed to be?
Admittedly. The transition between piano apps and online courses is fluid. Both run digitally. Both are (usually) tailored to beginners. And both are often modular. For me, however, the biggest difference lies in the way knowledge is imparted.
Play Piano by Intuition
Piano apps usually enable their users to start playing immediately. Often, however, this feels more like a computer game and less like “being musical”. Online piano courses, on the other hand, mix the best of both worlds: piano apps and classic piano lessons.
Although: There are also big differences in the online courses. Not all of them are reminiscent of the piano lessons from the past. And some open up completely new perspectives on music. More on that in a moment.
Here, too, I cannot give you any concrete recommendations. Every online piano course has its justification and sets its special focus.
But what I can do: Introduce you to a very special form of online piano lessons. One with tempo. Which quickly brings you to your goals. That’s coming now.
More quality of life. More joy. Through intuitive piano playing.

You need piano lessons with tempo. A method that quickly explains how to organize your fingers, safely play all chords, and confidently play any piece of piano music according to your own imagination.

And that gives you the opportunity to bring all your favorite songs quite intuitively to the keyboard. Completely without notes! And only with the necessary music theory.
I’m talking about the Masterclass Intuition. My course for aspiring Intuinauts. A course that gives you the tools for intuitive piano playing.
And that makes you independent of piano teachers, piano apps and Co. Because: If you stay on the ball, you will already have the knowledge after a few weeks that makes you independent for the rest of your piano career. Further lessons are actually not necessary.
