Imagine you can use your left hand when playing the piano as a matter of course. Without thinking too much and in harmony with your right hand. That would be incredibly great, wouldn’t it?
Especially if you are new to the piano, you will know the problems with the left hand. I also remember how I played my first melodies on the piano as a little kid around 30 years ago. First with the right hand. Everything was very casual and relaxed. But when the left hand came into play, it became a real challenge for me. Playing with both hands at the same time?
A really big step for little Gordon back then. And certainly for you as a beginner on the piano too. That’s just the way it is for every beginner.
Fortunately, it’s not rocket science to train your left hand. And to make it sound accomplished. If you take heed of a few of my tricks, you’ll be able to give your left hand the power it should have in no time. Plus: You’ll be even more confident on the piano.
If you still haven’t had enough after this, check out piano.university.
piano.university is the home of the Intuinauts. They can play anything that comes to mind. And don’t mind the interplay of the right and left hand.
But now let’s first make sure that you make your left hand sound accomplished. What’s the best way to do that? By cleaning up chords!
Always have your hands under control: 3 tricks for the left hand
Trick 1: Clean up chords
The chords are pressed with the left hand. The melody is played with the right hand. Classic. Almost everyone does it that way.
But what many people do is not necessarily good. Especially when the left hand plays the chords in the depths of the piano. Then everything starts to sound grumpy. Not necessarily advantageous, is it?
With my trick, that won’t happen to you.
What can you do? Clean up the chords. And this is how it works: I break the chord down into its individual parts. So I take the individual notes of the chord and distribute them on the keyboard so that the chord sounds harmonious. Of course, the best way to do this is to pack the grumpy notes further up.
An example is the C major chord. It is composed of the notes C – E – G.
We can either play them like this:
Or like this:
If you also strike the notes of the cleaned-up chord one after the other – and not at the same time – you can bring some rhythm into the matter.
This trick works with every chord. And the best thing is: It works totally intuitively. Plus: This trick works excellently even with small hands. And in combination with the pedal, the cleaned-up chord also sounds incredibly good.
Cleaned-up chords in combination with the pedal are particularly effective in ballads. But I see: There’s a real rocker chick in you. Or a funky guy. Then you definitely need trick number 2. And here it comes.
Trick 2: Don't forget the division of labor
Imagine you’re accompanying a band. Just like that. Completely spontaneously. There’s a really cool trick for pianists like you. The rule is as simple as it is ingenious.
With your left hand, you play the root note of the chord – in the case of C major, that would be C. And with your right hand, you play the complete triad. In the case of C major, that’s C – E – G.
You simply play the whole thing in a rhythm that comes to mind. So, for example, C and then C again (with the left). At the third C, you then add the triad of the right hand.
Try it out right away. You’ll see how good it sounds. And what a pep it brings to your piano playing.
The possibilities with this technique are incredibly diverse. If you want to learn more about it and make your left hand sound super rocking, be sure to check out my Masterclass Intuition on piano.university. Here we also get to know other instruments and their way of creating rhythm. Afterwards, we transfer this knowledge directly to the keyboard. It’s fun!
Now that you know the first two tricks, it’s time for a mega trick. This is something for advanced players. But you’ll definitely get to that point very, very quickly.
Trick 3: Play everything on the left
Your left hand can do everything that your right hand can. And so much more. It can not only play chords and accompaniment patterns. It can also perform entire melodies. And play anything that comes to mind. With a little practice, it’s really easy.
An example: You play the root note with your left hand and then jump up to play the matching chord.
This technique totally enhances ballads. For example, in the song One Moment in Time. The left hand plays exactly this technique in the final part. And it just sounds fantastic!
Are you really keen to perform this song on the piano? In the Masterclass Intuition we take a close look at this song. And we go through it in detail. So that you can make One Moment in Time your special moment. No matter what your playing level is.
