What Keyboard Instruments are there?

Before we delve deeper into the difference between keyboard and piano lessons, it’s important to understand the different types of keyboard instruments. Many of us are mainly familiar with the classic acoustic piano.

But there’s also the digital piano (e-piano), a modern variant, and the keyboard, which stands out for its multifunctionality and portability. Each of these instruments has its own characteristics and advantages.

How do the learning methods differ?

Have you ever noticed that piano players often perform pieces by great masters like Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven? That’s because traditional piano lessons are heavily focused on classical music.

So, if you love the sound of sonatas and symphonies (and have plenty of time left for practice in your daily life), then classical piano lessons might be just right for you.

But what if you’re more into current chart hits? This is where keyboard lessons come in. Here, the focus is often on learning current pop songs and hits you know from the radio. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t play classics with it. You can find a list of beginner-friendly songs here: Piano Pieces for Beginners

What’s the Focus: Technique or Features?

Another aspect that distinguishes the two forms of lessons is the approach to music. In classical piano lessons, sheet music and technique are often prioritized. With the keyboard, however, improvisation is often prioritized, where you don’t necessarily need sheet music.

Instead of spending hours perfecting your technique, in keyboard lessons, you’ll learn how to optimally use the instrument’s numerous features – from various melodies and rhythms to a wide range of sounds and accompaniment patterns.

Some traditional piano teachers might argue that learning these features isn’t strictly necessary. However, that entirely depends on your personal musical goals and preferences.
